Traditional Irish Music

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE.

This site provides access to traditional Irish tunes in a variety of electronic formats. See “File Formats” for a description. The primary method uses the Myriad Music browser plug-in to let you see and hear the tune at the same time.

Introduction

Further info on this plug-in can be found at: Myriad-Music Plug-in : from where you can download and install the plug-in and test that it is working.

The plug-in allows you to:

1. See the sheet music and hear it being played simultaneously. The cursor will highlight the note being played. The sheet music notation has been supplemented for those less confident in reading music notation. Each note is labelled, giving its position on the staff (d e f g a b C D E F G), to make reading easier.

2. Change the tempo.
Start off listening to the tune repeatedly at the normal pace, often 120 or 140 beats per minute. In this way get the tune, its rhythm, ornamentations etc into your head. Then slow it right down as you start to play it. Gradually as your finger memory builds up you can gradually increase the tempo as your competence increases.

3. Add in a metronome.
Keeping the rhythm is so important. The metronome can help in the early stages, then turn it off as your rhythm becomes secure and you no longer need the support of the metronome.

4. Transpose the tune into different keys easily.

5. Print the sheet music

6. Save/Download the sheet music in Myriad’s myr format. This format can be used with Myriad Software’s Melody Assistant and Harmony Assistant computer software packages. If you have either of these software packages, the sheet music can be edited and enhanced automatically with tablature for stringed instruments, guitar chords etc. Melody Assistant is shareware and is highly recommended. Further information on these software programmes, or the browser plug-in can be found at:
